About Us


The Center for Geriatric Clinical Simulation provides access to a collection of multimedia and print resources focused on improving the care of older adults who undergo sudden changes in health or functional status, or experience sentinel events such as falls, fractures, or pressure ulcers. The center’s resources include an online library of clinical simulations for registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs). Housed in The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, the Center was founded in 2003 as part of the grant The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing received from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Comprehensive Geriatric Education Program (CGEP), Division of Diversity and Interdisciplinary Education, for “Improving the Nursing Care of Acutely Ill Elders,” HRSA grant number D62HP01913.


The primary aim of the Center for Geriatric Clinical Simulation is to disseminate state of the art clinical simulations that improve geriatric nursing competencies. These peer-reviewed geriatric clinical simulations for long-term and acute care settings are currently leveled for RN, LPN and CNA scopes of practice.

The new Center for Geriatric Clinical Simulation website offers access to a broader audience, along with updated content including multimedia and material focused on interdisciplinary communication. We are particularly excited to offer new interdisciplinary simulations addressing nurse-physician communication about changes in the geriatric patient’s condition.

Connecting Nurses

Clinical simulations were originally developed by faculty and adjunct faculty at the UNC School of Nursing, and the topics chosen represent the direct input of nurses working in a variety of geriatric care settings. These simulations provide focused consideration of prevalent geriatric conditions or illnesses that could readily go undetected and result in hospitalization, further comorbidity, or death.

The Center for Geriatric Clinical Simulation provides access to its resources for professional enrichment and personal study free of charge. In order to monitor use and ensure continuous quality improvement, the online library requires a brief registration process and requests feedback after completing each clinical simulation.
